Little Christs

Jesus was a rabbi. Rabbis in those days were traveling teachers of Torah (the Jewish Bible). Each had a group of students who did everything with their Rabbi so that they could become like him. These were his disciples. Before Jesus left these disciples, He told them, "Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you" (Matthew 28 NLT).

The early church was mocked for being "little Christs" - which is where we get the word Christian. But those disciples latched onto the term because being Christ-like was their goal. We too are supposed to change lives by being "little Christs."

Now, don't get me wrong. You and I will never be Christ. We will never fully be like Him. But we are called to live by his example.

At this point I run the risk of just revamping the "WWJD" fad, which I am tired of. Too often the "What would Jesus do?" statement was not followed by the question "What DID Jesus do." Without the second question, how do we answer the first? What's to keep us from putting in our own agenda.

In this blog, I am going to give it a shot. One at a time I'm going to read what Jesus taught and did. Then I am going to try to do it...or something like it. After that, I plan to write about my experience....successful or not. I'll try to be honest because - let's be serious - I am not much like Christ. And whatever I do like him is by His Spirit and His example. There is nothing different about me from anyone else.

Feel free to join me on this journey. You can leave a comment about your own experience or how you interpret a certain passage.
